Study on benefits of plant breeding published, March 2016

On 15th March the Plants for the Future ETP (European Technology Platform) launched in Brussels the publication of their independent report on the importance of plant breeding entitled ‘The economic, social and environmental value of plant breeding in the European Union’.

This study, by Steffen Noleppa, presents a strong qualitative and importantly, quantitative assessment of the effect plant breeding has had – not only relating to increased yield per se but also concerning the broader consequences relating to e.g. land use efficiency, more environmentally-friendly cultivation practices, facilitating product diversity to meet consumer demand, reducing manual labour requirements etc.
